I+E were appointed by the Board of Governors of Foyle College and Western Education & Library Board for the delivery of Foyle College and Ebrington Primary and Nursery Schools in Londonderry. The project provided the co–location of three schools in a campus environment in separate new–build replacements linked by shared kitchen and energy centre facilities at the former Clooney MOD site.
Foyle College, a voluntary grammar school, has been designed to provide high quality teaching accommodation, grass sports pitches, five synthetic tennis courts and a 3G pitch for an enrolment of 850 students. The layout has been developed in response to the nature and topography of the site and to maximise both the presence on the Limavady Road and potential of the open southerly aspect of the site. The design was developed through 3D modelling to test massing and orientation. Modelled on an L–shaped formation, the general classroom block is one form and the specialist subjects are conceived as three separate volumes constituting a sequence of atria spaces that are top lit and feature surrounding organic–shaped balconies.
Ebrington Primary School provides 16 classrooms for an enrolment of 440 pupils, and the adjoining nursery unit provides 52 places in two classrooms with associated facilities.
