Isherwood + Ellis were appointed to implement an innovative reconfiguration of the vacant, former Balmoral High School, to create a stimulating and appropriate environment to meet the educational needs of St. Gerard’s 250 pupils with moderate learning difficulties. The building sought to create wayfinders within the circulation to allow children to easily understand the building spatially and give a sense of belonging through use of place making. Without major structural changes I+E managed to successfully rejuvenate an inappropriate school into one suitable for the particular needs of its pupils and educators.
