Royal Jubilee Maternity Services (RJMS) is one of four linked hospitals that make up Northern Ireland’s biggest and best known hospitals complex. Almost two thirds of the Northern Ireland population live within 40minutes travel of the 70acre site which is situated only a few minutes drive from Belfast City Centre.
RJMS delivers over 5000 babies each year, providing maternity services to the population of Belfast.
In September 2010 the Board of Directors Belfast Trust agreed the business case for a new build hospital to accommodate maternity services including delivery theatres, birthing rooms, antenatal and neonatology services.
Following a design competition, a joint partnership between I+E and AECOM was formally appointed alongside WYG to a framework agreement for design team services for the Belfast Trust.
The design concept is one in which patient areas are formed around a series of courtyards bringing landscaping, views and natural light into all of the patient areas whilst aiding clear and easy wayfinding throughout the building.
The design will accommodate delivery theatres, birthing rooms, antenatal and neonatology services all of which will be predominantly located along the outer perimeter of the building, with ancillary areas largely located along a central spine.
