The North West Cancer Centre in association with O’Connell Mahon Architects provides a state of the art facility that consists of four new Radiotherapy Treatment rooms, Outpatient and Diagnostic facilities, Chemotherapy Unit extension and upgrade, new In–patient accommodation, ancillary support facilities and extensive enabling works to free the proposed site.
Conceived as a 3–4 storey brick building broken down to achieve a human scale appropriate for the unit. The buildings configuration purposely provides a continuous visual connection to the surrounding landscaping. This is achieved by creating a glazed public circulation zone leading from the entrance which flows in and around a series of separate brick–clad enclosures / activities to coincide with the patient’s treatment path; this circulation space brings natural light and landscaping into the heart of the patients’ experience of the radiotherapy process. The rest of the building rises above these enclosures in a carefully massed brick and zinc construction with large glazed elements reinforcing the sense of openness created at the lower levels.
